ARCTIC CIRCLE HOLIDAYS IN SEARCH OF THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

Curious spectators have long since been captivated by the Northern Lights, and it’s not hard to see why. The shifting swirls of the Aurora envelop you in their majesty as they illuminate the Arctic skies, performing beguiling dances of colour: twists and turns, bends and bows. Rolling. Spinning. Dancing.

But the playful Aurora isn’t always flamboyant: it’s elusive. You’ll have to find it.

Fortunately, we at Transun know where to go. Lapland specialists with almost four decades of experience behind us, we know a thing or two about searching for the Aurora Borealis – that’s why all of our holidays are based in uncommercial, True Lapland locations, where city light pollution doesn’t impair the intensity of the Northern Lights. Moreover, all of our holiday locations are based along the Official Northern Lights Route, a 600km route weaving through Lapland, recognised by the governments of Finland, Sweden and Norway as offering the best viewings of the Aurora.

Our Northern Lights holidays are arranged so that you can make the most of your time in Lapland and enjoy the extraordinary experiences offered in this very special corner of the world.

Your holiday begins with a morning flight to Enontekio Airport from one of 14 UK airports, on our direct charter flight, exclusive to Transun. Enontekio is a very small airport and yours is likely to be the only flight that day. From there, you make the one-hour transfer to Karesuando, a remote border village that straddles Swedish and Finnish Lapland. Located some 300km inside the Arctic Circle, Karesuando is located perfectly on the Northern Lights Route and offers the choice of two hotels: the Davvi Arctic Star in Swedish Karesuando, or the more rustic Davvi Arctic Lodge, in Finnish Karesuando. Your included accommodation is on a full-board basis. We also provide you with thermal snow suits and boots for the duration of your stay, so you are well equipped for Lapland’s Arctic temperatures.

Although the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and can never be guaranteed, you’ll still have an amazing holiday thanks to the host of once-in-a-lifetime excursions which are included in this holiday. A full itinerary is given on arrival so it can be best organised around weather conditions and Northern Lights predictions, and will include the following:

Northern Lights Snowmobile Safari
Duration: 2 hours

An evening excursion when, with the crisp Arctic sky overhead, you head to a vantage point in the wilderness with the hope of seeing the fabled Northern Lights. Two adults share a snowmobile*.

Northern Lights Forest Trek
Duration: 1 hour

A guided walk through the forest to a spectacular viewpoint, overlooking the border-village of Karesuando. From here, you may be lucky enough to witness the Northern Lights dancing above the village.

Call of the Wild Husky Safari
Duration: 1 hour

Mush a team of excited huskies through spectacular Lapland scenery - they're eager for the off! Two adults share a sled and dog team.

Reindeer Camp
Duration: 2 hours

Learn about the importance of reindeer to the people of Lapland on a visit to a traditional kota and herding corral. Then, enjoy a reindeer sleigh ride - a time-old mode of transport in these parts!

Snowshoe Introduction
Duration: 2 hours

This guided snowshoe tour serves as a simple introduction to a fun way of traversing the snowy terrain. (Only available on 4-night holidays).

The Majatalo Hotel

At the Hetan Majatalo, you can be assured of a warm welcome!

This family-run hotel has been welcoming guests to the heart of True Lapland since 1924. Now in its fourth-generation, the hotel is an established staple in Arctic tourism and still offers a stay of peace and relaxation amongst the thrills and excitement of the snow activities which the area has to offer. The hotel backs on to a forest and is set away from the main road in the centre of the small and picturesque village of Hetta.

The Majatalo has 27 rooms, sleeping between 1-6 people. Many of the rooms have a loft (or mezzanine) level, with a skyline window additional to the one of the ground floor. All rooms have ensuite shower rooms, and are equipped with the necessities for a comfortable stay: television, radio, mini fridge, drying closet, kettle and hair dryer.

The restaurant serves original dishes from Lapland: home-made and tasty. The lounge lobby is a great place to unwind and reminisce about the day in Lapland with fellow guests; a great place to read, watch TV, or enjoy a drink. The hotel has saunas to warm you and your party after a long day of Arctic adventures. A small library and souvenir shop are also available. WiFi reaches all hotel rooms.

The Hetan Majatalo is an excellent choice for those searching for the Aurora Borealis. Situated in Hetta, at the edge of the Pallas-Yllas National Park, the vast open surrounds emit no light pollution, making this a prime Aurora viewing location along the Nordics’ Northern Lights Belt.

Cahkal Hotel

A touch of luxury in True Lapland!

Cahkal Hotel is named after the lake which it overlooks, and it’s typical of this hotel to draw inspiration from its natural surrounds: the Arctic atmosphere is woven into the fabric of the building. But this is a cosy hotel, too: the roaring log fire and the aromas of freshly prepared local cuisine ensure a warm welcome!

Independently owned and run, the care which has been given to Cahkal Hotel’s creation are second to none: from sweeping mountain views from your room to mouthwatering cuisine, every detail has been considered to ensure an exquisite stay.

Opened in September 2022, this stylish hotel offers just 23 rooms, each having views of the spectacular surrounding mountainous scenery which stretches to the horizon. Rooms combine contemporary design with traditional hospitality, ensuring a comfortable stay in style.

Hotel facilities include a traditional Finnish sauna (private hire can be made locally) and a fully-licensed bar area in which you can relax and unwind from an exhilarating day in the snow. At the hotel’s Aika Kitchen and Bar, where meals are served, you will discover a mixture of tradition and modernity in the dishes offered, which compliment the magnificent restaurant environment.

Based at the foot of the snow-capped Lyngen Alps, and perched on the edge of Lake Kilpis, Kilpisjarvi is the perfect base from which to explore the most northern parts of True Lapland – a very special place indeed, where unspoiled nature and fresh adventure await.

An undoubted highlight of this tour is venturing out on snowmobile to the ‘three borders’ point, where Norway, Finland and Sweden meet – circle around all three countries in less than 30 seconds! And there’s more – this holiday also includes a Northern Lights snowmobile tour, where you may be dazzled by the dancing Aurora, and a reindeer camp excursion where you’ll be introduced to the local Sami and their way of life.

Your Snowmobile Voyager holiday begins with a morning flight to Enontekio Airport, on our direct charter flight, exclusive to Transun. Enontekio is a very small airport and yours is likely to be the only flight that day. From there, you make the two-hour transfer to Kilpisjarvi, with a stop enroute to collect your thermal suits and snow boots, which you keep for the duration of your stay in Lapland.

Upon arrival in Kilpisjavi, you’ll be shown to your chosen hotel or cabin, where your stay will be on a full-board basis, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Your Transun rep will give a welcome presentation and highlight some of the features of the area – Kilpis is steeped in myths and legends, and the spectacular surrounding scenery provides the perfect backdrop to these fascinating stories.

The Three Borders Snowmobile Safari
Duration: Half Day

The highpoint of this holiday is the snowmobile tour to the Three Borders point, where Finland, Sweden and Norway meet – supposedly the most peaceful such border in the world. Cross all three countries in a matter of seconds! Two adults share a snowmobile.*

Northern Lights Snowmobile Safari
Duration: 2 Hours

Kilpisjarvi is on the official Northern Lights Route, so hop on your snowmobile and venture out to an ideal remote location in the hope of catching the swaying Aurora overhead. Two adults share a snowmobile.*

Sami Reindeer Experience
Duration: 2.5 Hours

A fascinating introduction to a reindeer farm given by a Sami family who have been herding in the area for hundreds of years; this tour includes an 800m sleigh ride and the opportunity to feed the reindeer.

Arctic Ice Fishing by Snowmobile
Duration: 1.5 Hours

Travelling by snowmobile, you arrive at a frozen lake where you can try your hand at traditional ice fishing - you just drill a hole in the ice and lower your baited hook into the icy waters below. (Available on 4 nights only).

Hotel Rakka

Stylish stays in snowscape surrounds!

Newly opened in March 2023, Kilpisjarvi’s newest accommodation offering is a sumptuous retreat set in the very Arctic wilderness which True Lapland is known for. This new 42-room hotel takes inspiration from the nature which surrounds it – the pristine snowscapes and the iconic Saana Fell which towers over it.

Rooms are spacious and contemporary in Nordic design, and include all the facilities and amenities required for a comfortable stay after a day’s adventures in the Arctic. Rear-facing rooms have spectacular views from the floor-to-ceiling windows, many facing the mighty Saana Fell – the source of so many of Kilpisjarvi’s ancient myths and legends.

The elegant and trendy restaurant and bar area offers equally impressive views from the front of the hotel. Perched on the incline of the village, the restaurant showcases the village of Kilpisjarvi, its dramatic scenery, and the mountainous horizon which surrounds it – all from the comfort of the bar. Sit back and relax. Gin and tonic with a view?

Tundrea

The Tundrea cabins and apartments offer a choice of timber-built accommodation which is quintessentially Lapland. Tundrea is tucked away at the foot of the Saana Fell – arguably the most iconic fell mountain in Lapland – and sits at the banks of Lake Kilpisjarvi, offering sweeping panoramic views of the Arctic tundra. Steeped in myths and legends, Kilpisjarvi is the last outpost of Finnish Lapland; located in the far north, just above the tree line - a real example of 'True Lapland' - ideal for the adventurous.

There are a number of family accommodation options available at Tundrea, depending on your budget and party size. Each cabin or apartment is inspired by the local surrounds and offers a quiet space in which to unwind and enjoy quality family time in the Arctic. All rooms or cabins come equipped with a traditional sauna and Wi-Fi access.

Tundrea also features a lakeside hot tub, for which reservations and payment can be made locally. Meal times are often staggered during December to avoid congestion in the restaurant.

Tsakhkal - Sleep 2
The Tundrea Tsakhkal is situated in the middle of the fell birches. The rooms have experiential views to the Saana fell. The suites can comfortably accommodate two, available with double or twin beds.
